Hadeeth7:
On Abee Hurairah [1] He said that
the Prophet (saws) said, “
Verily Allah does not look at your bodies or your
forms. But He looks at your hearts”. It was
related by Muslim.
I said (Sheikh Naasir): And Muslim and others added
in another narration of the Hadeeth “
...and your actions”. And it is collected in
Ghaayitul-maraam fee Takhreej al-Halaal wal-Haraam
. And this addition
is vitally important because many of the people misunderstand
the Hadeeth without it. So if you were to command
them with what Ash-shara’ul hakeem commanded
them with like the growing of the beard or differing
from the Kuffaar and similar to this from the
commandments of the Share’eah, they would answer
you that what is relied upon is what is in the heart,
and they present as proof for their claim this Hadeeth,
without knowledge of this authenticated addition that
points [to the fact] that Allah also looks at your
actions. So if they (actions) are good He accepts
them, and if they are otherwise He rejects them, as
a number of texts point to. Like his statement (saws),
“ Whoever invents in this
affair of ours that which is not from it is rejected”.
[2]
So in actuality it is inconceivable to have uprightness
of the heart and not have uprightness of action. And
the Prophet (saws) has given a most beautiful explanation
of this in the Hadeeth of Nu’man ibn Basheer [3]
“...........Verily in the
body is a morsel of flesh which, if it be right, all
of the body is right and which, if it be diseased
then all of it is diseased. Truly it is the heart”.
[4] And the Hadeeth “
You will either straighten your rows [of Salat] or
Allah will divide between your faces (hearts)”.[5]
And in his statement, “
Verily Allah is beautiful and loves beauty”.
[6] And it is mentioned in regards
to the beauty of physical objects, in contrast of
the thinking of many. Look at Hadeeth 617.
So if you know this, then from the worst mistakes
of which I have seen in this collection ( Riyaadhus-Saliheen
) in all of the printed and manuscript copies that
I have come upon, is that the author- May Allah have
mercy upon him- collected this addition, but his pen,
or the pen of it’s scribe slipped and altered it from
it’s proper place to one that corrupted it’s meaning.
In it, “..........not at
your forms or your actions, but He looks at...”
And all of the publishers, authenticators, and commentators
were mistaken due to that, not excluding the Meeriyyah
print, or other than it. Even the commentator Ibn
‘Alaan himself was mistaken and explained the Hadeeth
upon the change [in wording]. He said,“
What is meant is that Allah does not base reward upon
magnitude of body nor beauty of form nor abundance
of action”! [7]
There is no doubt to the futility of this explanation,
because it, with its contradictions to the correct
wording, is adversary to many of the texts from the
Book and the Sunnah that point [to the fact] that
the precedence of the worshippers in Al-Jannah
is related to their righteous deeds, many or few.
And from that, the statement of Allah, “
For all there will be degrees (or ranks) according
to what they did”. [8] and
in His statement in the Hadeeth Qudsi [9],
“... O my slaves, it is
but your deeds that I reckon up for you and then recompense
you for, so whoever finds good, praise Allah...”
[10]
So how could it be understood that Allah doesn’t look
at your actions or your forms or your bodies, and
it is the foundation of entering Al-Jannah in addition
to Imaan as Allah says, “
Enter you Paradise, because of what you used to do”.
[11] So look how many Taqleed
has sent, from it’s people, far from the correct,
and has landed them in a valley of profound error!
And that is due to nothing except their avoidance
of the study of the Sunnah from its authentic sources.
Wallahul-musta’aan!
